Information for Teachers

The Taste of Medicine website has been designed to help school and college students by providing a range of support including; information and advice about the variety of healthcare courses and careers; how to maximise their chances of progression to a medical or healthcare course, specifically focusing on work experience and communications skills; how learning and teaching takes place at university.

Getting Started has been developed with year 9 students in mind, given the importance we place on educational engagement and high academic performance from a young age. However it is also the case that many teachers have found it a useful resource with a range of other cohorts.

Listed below are some hints and tips on how to make the best use of this website with your class. You are of course under no obligation to use these lesson plans, but they have been identified through our testing of the site in a number of different schools as effective ways of raising awareness and aspiration levels among school students. The plans also have significant curriculum links to Key Stage Three Citizenship, Science and Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) Education. The specific curriculum links are detailed within each lesson plan.

In our testing with local schools, we have found Getting Started works very well with the following groups (noting that this list is not exhaustive):

  • Year 8 and 9 Gifted and Talented cohorts
  • Year 8, 9 and 10 AimHigher cohorts
  • Individual year 9 and 10 Science classes
  • Individual year 9, 10 and 11 Health and Social Care classes
  • Full year group assembly (year 9 and/or 10)
  • FE cohorts for whom English is not the first language

The following simple lesson plans can be used as a guide for when you use the Taste of Medicine: Getting Started website at your school. In addition to these plans you might want to use the website in other ways too, and it can meet further curriculum links in addition to those already mentioned. If you have any questions about the site as a whole or the plan below please contact us at tasteofmedicine@sgul.ac.uk
